Languedoc is the very essence of the Mediterranean - bright sun-filled skies; the air fresh with the smell of pine and herbs; and sweeping stretches of sandy beach lapped by blue seas. Inland, the mountain valleys are green and full of flowers and through them flow clear streams and rivers, which, over the centuries, have carved out canyons and gorges. Languedoc is also famous for its lagoons and marshes especially of the Carmargue, with its famous white horses. Towns like Nîmes, Montpellier and Uzès are testament to a rich history and heritage involving the Romans through Medieval Crusaders to rich Renaissance Dukes.
The region boasts a wide variety of seafood and its charcuterie is renowned. Fresh fruit of all sorts are abound. There are many fine wines from Côtes du Rhônes to Corbières and Minervois.
